ECCT with Advanced Features Software Option

Product Summary

This item is the Electronically Cranked Coil Tester (ECCT) with Advanced Features Software option (Magneto Test Option is NOT included).  The Electronically Cranked Coil Tester (ECCT) is used to test and align Ford and K-W Model T coil units used on 1913 to 1927 model years.  It is capable of aligning coil points with ease and precision previously unachievable with previous tools.  The ECCT permits coil point adjustment by measuring the dwell time to fire the first spark so that each coil can be precisely adjusted the same to minimize coil to coil (cylinder to cylinder) ignition timing variation to help achieve optimal engine performance.  The ECCT also tests the internal capacitor (Condenser) for proper value and leakage to ensure maximum point life and optimum coil performance.  The ECCT comes with AC power supply (100-240VAC, 50/60Hz), PC interface cable and Magneto test cable.

The ECCT is a standalone tool that does not require PC hook up to use, however, test results can be displayed numerically and graphically on a PC or Laptop with the optional Advanced Features Software included in this package makes coil adjusting much easier.  The software runs on Windows based systems and permits the user to change the coil firing rate from 375 to 5000 RPM and number of sparks fired from 2 to 250 to fine tune coils for the ultimate engine performance.  A written summary of each coil test result is provided along with suggestions on how to improve coil performance which is very helpful to beginners just learning how to adjust coil points.

The Magneto Test display is provided when used with ECCTs that have the Magneto Test Option enabled.  The Magneto Test display provides a real time engine Tachometer with numerical read out of engine RPM, magneto output RMS voltage under load and no load conditions.  A numerical value of magneto magnetic field strength is also provided.  This software feature requires the ECCT Magneto Test Option to be enabled. (Model T Coil Not Included)

ECCT + Advanced Features Software cost: $399.95

Additional Information

The ECCT operates very differently from the Hand Cranked Coil Tester (HCCT). The ECCT measures and displays the coil dwell time to fire which determines engine ignition timing and ultimate engine performance. The HCCT measures and displays the average RMS coil current which is just an approximation of coil time to fire because coil current can be influenced by many other variables including coil inductance variations and point arcing which can cause significant variations in coil firing time and ignition timing. Simply put, that’s why you adjust ignition timing in modern cars for best performance and not ignition coil current.

The ECCT precisely measures the time it takes the coil to fire the first spark from a relaxed, steady state, standby condition similar to when the timer is in between cylinders and waiting to fire. ECCT coil test uses a rapid step change in voltage similar to what the magneto delivers to the coil when the timer comes on contact at normal engine operating speeds. The HCCT, in contrast, applies a continuous AC voltage to the coil without ever permitting the coil to rest in between firings as the timer and ECCT do. The HCCT voltage amplitude is weak and rises abnormally slowly at hand cranked speed so coil points are adjusted for abnormally slow engine operating conditions.  The ECCT permits coil point adjustment with engine operating speeds up to 5000 RPM with Advanced Features Software.
